Concept Mood Board

This mood board shows a concept idea behind the next photo shoot, the idea of separation and togetherness using accessories and the body. The idea of the photographs being taken so they cut off the body in order to separate or isolate a certain part. The body acts as a platform with the accessories being at the forefront of the images, positioning the accessories so they are together with the body and also apart. Where they are not connected to the body or they are separated from the rightful place on the body in order to give a sense of separation.  

Beth Buxton Stylist

Beth Buxton is a London based stylist currently editor of Ligature magazine, Buxton also consults on ad campaigns for fashion labels. I have picked out a few pieces of her work that inspire me in my own project. The use of black and white is key within my magazine so these shots show lighting effects and how well black and white styling/garments emphasises the positive and negative space.

Rachel Zoe Stylist

Rachel Zoe is one of the most notable and influential fashion and celebrity stylist. Rachel Zoe has a very distinctive style it's retro, glamorous and bohemian mixed together, but she still manages to make each and every client look individual. Rachel Zoe's collection's combine all of her signatures styles with a minimalist approach, clean lines and distinctive character. Black and white is always a feature amongst her collection.

Love magazine

Love Magazine originated from the United Kingdom founded in 2008, launched and edited by Katie Grand, biannual fashion magazine.

Daniel Kennedy

Daniel Kennedy is a London based celebrity and fashion photographer, Kennedy works on shoots for advertising clients, magazines and Celebrities. Below is a selection of his work that has inspired me for my next photo shoot, separation & togetherness, the idea of representing these opposing words by using the body as a platform with the use of accessories. These images give me ideas for camera shots, the separation of the body, not showing the whole figure and focusing on the placement of accessories.

My next photo shoot concept is the opposing words separation and togetherness.

When I think about the word separation a few things come to mind...

• Separation of the body
• Separating two people
• Separating things/Objects

After thinking about a few ideas of my own I started doing some research and came across an amazing graphics, artist, photographer who produced a series of images using the idea of separation, his twist of sexuality and unconventional product integration brings his sculptural compositions to life. 

He has used accessories as the main focus, the female form serves as an almost arbitrary medium in the artistic display of high end goods, highlighting the individual design of products with the eye candy as a secondary focus. These playful experimental photographs walk the fine line between design, fashion, and art, the female body is sexualised and objectified. His advertising photography is truly exploratory, combining unexpected still life elements with fashion, styling and set design, objects come to life in his playful fashion stories.

Cole Thompson

Cole Thompson is a Black and White fine art photographer based in the US. For Thompson...

..."Colour records the image, but Black and White captures the feelings that lie beneath the surface".

This quote for me really sums up the way in which I feel about black and white photography as apposed to colour. Black and white for me shows rawness and emotion and captures the realness of a scene. Colour is still very beautiful and captures feelings, just not the feelings beneath the surface which is what I am aiming for when producing this magazine.

I want those emotions to come through, as you will see below I have a before and after picture from Thompson's work. From this you can really see much more detail and feeling with the black and white image than you can in the colour version, this is what I want to capture in my images, that sense of emotion and rawness with all details in a single image being captured.

You can really see the different in contrast between these images. The colour image to me is quite flat and lifeless compared to the black and white which gives off an emotion and rawness, with all the details of the clouds and surface makes it feel a lot more 'real'.

The feeling that comes from these images and any of Thompson's images are decided by the viewer, its what they think it means to them. This is a concept that involves my whole project, the images I will be creating are ones that the viewer themselves will decide what the images mean to them. Although they will have an underlying concept to them, ultimately the viewer decides what they mean.

Within my magazine there will be a featured article with an interview from Cole Thompson himself, where you will learn all about him and his work and what inspires him, and why he loves black and white photography.
